Kisan Rail Yojana: On Monday PM Narendra Modi flagged off the Kisan rail Project from Maharashtra to west Bengal through the video conference. Indian railways launched the Kisan Rail to transport items like fruits, vegetables, milk, fish, etc. This specific parcel train will be governed by the Central Railways with ten coaches, will have a luggage break coach and Farmers will be able to reserve a parcel by communicating the railway station. This will transport several goods services including fruits and vegetables.
About Kisan Rail Yojana
The Kisan Rail Yojana was launched by Nirmala Sitharaman , Union Finance Minister, while presenting the Union Budget 2021, with its pilot project to be launched on 07 August 2020 by Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar. On August 2020 and up to January 2021, the Indian railways launched more than 157 kisan rail services, facilitates the transporting of thousand tones of fruits and vegetables. Nirmala Sitharaman, Finance Minister of India, had declared this initiative in her Budget speech envisaging the setting up of a ‘Kisan Rail’ through the public-private-partnership (PPP) model for a cold supply chain to transport perishable items.
Perishable rail cargo centers are being constructed in the vicinity of railway stations where farmers can store their produce. The assessment is being done on the basis of seasonal availability of these items, so as to obtain efficiency and economies of scale. Commodities booked via Kisan Rail trains are charged at ‘P’-scale of parcel tariff. 50% subsidy in freight, which is borne by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) under the “Operation Greens (TOP to TOTAL)” Scheme, is being granted on transportation of fruits and vegetables through Kisan Rail Services. No Reefer Rail Container or Refrigerated Parcel Van has been procured for this purpose so far. This information was given by the Minister of Railways, Commerce & Industry and Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Shri Piyush Goyal in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today. The purpose is to provide as many fruits and vegetables as possible to the family. Extra produce should reach the entrepreneurs involved in the reproduction of juice, pickle, sauce, chips, etc
The PM launched a Pilot project of Kisan Rail between Maharashtra and Bihar that the Government’s priority is concentrated on storage-linked infrastructure and processing industries correlated with value addition in farming outcomes. Such plans have been established under the PM Krishi Sampada Yojana, Mega Food Parks, Cold Chain Infrastructure, and Agro Processing Cluster. Rs 10000 crore have been approved for micro food processing industries under the Aatma Nirbhar Abhiyan package. it is for the support and assistance of the rural people, farmers, and youth, Farmer Producer Organizations(FPO’s) and cooperative groups like women Self Help Groups get priority in agri-business and agri-infrastructure.

Under Kisan Rail Yojana, the Central Government has decided to provide 50% subsidy on rail fares to the farmers. The process of 50% subsidy to farmers under this scheme has been started from October 14. Under this scheme, farmers will have to pay only 50% of the railway fare only, the remaining 50% will be done by the Ministry of Food Processing to the Ministry of Railways. This subsidy will be provided only on transportation of fruits and vegetables notified by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
